The route in two stages

Stage 1: Errachidia to Ouarzazate (about 300 km, 4 to 4.5 hours)

First, head west from Errachidia through Goulmima and Tinejdad to Tinghir, about 2 hours away. Then continue through Boumalne Dadès and Kelaat M’Gouna, the “valley of roses”, to Ouarzazate. In addition, this stretch is known as the road of a thousand kasbahs, so there are many places to stop for photos.

Stage 2: Ouarzazate to Marrakech (about 200 km, 3 hours)

Next, the road climbs into the High Atlas and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,260 m one of the highest road passes in Morocco. The road has many bends, so drive slowly and take breaks. Finally, it descends through Berber villages to Marrakech.

Best stops on the way

  • Todra Gorge: a short detour north from Tinghir into a dramatic canyon.
  • Dadès Valley: famous for its rock formations and winding roads, near Boumalne Dadès.
  • Ouarzazate: a good place to spend the night, halfway along the route.
  • Aït Benhaddou: a fortified village about 30 km from Ouarzazate, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How a one-way rental works

We offer one-way rental between Errachidia (including Errachidia Airport) and Marrakech (including Marrakech Airport), in both directions. So, you can pick up your car in Errachidia, explore the desert, and then drop it off in Marrakech at the end of your trip. Please mention your drop-off location when you book, so we can confirm the details and the price with you.

Which car is best for the drive to Marrakech?

Because the route is long and crosses a mountain pass, comfort matters. For example, the Dacia Duster and Renault Clio 5 both have 260 Nm of torque and a 6-speed gearbox, which helps on the climbs. On the other hand, if you prefer not to use a clutch on mountain bends, choose the automatic Hyundai Accent.

Driving tips for the Tizi n’Tichka pass

  • Drive in daylight: the mountain road is narrow and has many bends.
  • Check the weather in winter: snow can occasionally close the pass for a few hours.
  • Take breaks: above all on the long climb, and let faster vehicles pass.
  • Refuel in Ouarzazate: before starting the mountain section.
